Chapter Four

Confused, JC stilled. “What’s wrong?”

Brandy held on to him as she carefully sank to sit on the floor, right where she’d been standing. “Can you get my purse, please?”

Alarm shot through him. He grabbed the purse off of the chair and put it on the ground in front of her.

“I’m sorry to ask, but can you get me some water too?”

What’s wrong? He rushed to the mini fridge. When he made it back to her, she had two prescription bottles out and her trembling hand held a yellow pill and a white one.

“Thank you.” After swallowing the pills, she carefully scooted and sat with her back to the couch. “This is going to sound rude.” She was practically panting. “I don’t mean it to be, but can you move out of my line of vision?”

Picking up the medicine bottles, he stepped to the side of the couch, and read the prescriptions. One was for nausea, the other for dizziness. “Why are you dizzy?”

“Don’t take this the wrong way, it’s not your fault, but you moved my head when we were kissing.”

Jesus.

Her entire body was visibly shaking now.

“Oh, God. The room won’t stop spinning.” She felt behind her on the couch, snagged a pillow, and gradually stretched onto her side, her head propped on the pillow.

He dropped to his knees next to her, wanting to help. “What can I do?”

“Stop. Moving. I can see you in my periphery, and you’re making the vertigo worse.”

He sat beside her, being as still as possible. “What is this about?”

“I have a neuro-immune disorder.” She brought her knees to her chest. “The meds will kick in soon.”

God. What kind of hell had she been living in? All this time he’d never guessed she was ill. He opened his mouth to speak, to ask questions. His breath stuck in his lungs. He helplessly sat motionless beside her not knowing what to say, afraid to move.

She convulsed so badly, he wanted to cover her body with his until the tremors stopped. How could she live like this? How often did this happen?

Unnerving moments passed as he listened to her labored breathing.

Finally, she spoke softly—her voice quivering. “When I had the first dizzy spell, I thought I was pregnant and rushed to my gynecologist, thrilled and excited—as I knew you’d be. But I wasn’t pregnant. She sent me to an ear nose and throat doctor, who instructed me to take some antivert and anti-nausea meds and I would be fine. And it does help, that’s what I just took. However, I began having the dizziness more frequently.”

She stared at something across the room. “I tried to tell you. I truly did. That’s why I came to Dallas. While I sat in the hotel parking lot calling you, I was getting ready to brave the paparazzi and go to the hotel staff to explain who I was and ask your room number, but I had a terrible episode and had to be rushed to the hospital.”

He swallowed and found his voice.
